Anytime you see a Hawaiian shirt being worn whether it's on television or in a movie you know what state is being represented. The colorful and comfortable shirt makes you want to plan a trip there or recollect your last visit to the islands, even if it was years ago the memories still resonate of a relaxing time.

What has caused the Hawaiian shirt to become so easily recognizable? Hawaii became a popular vacation destination in the 1930's because the beauty of the islands and the comfortable tropic weather was drawing stars and starlets from Hollywood were drawn to the islands. It became widely known as the perfect spot to relax and enjoy perfect weather throughout the year.

These workers brought their native attire with them and the Kimono and Barong Tagalong evolved into the Aloha or Hawaiian shirt. Plantation workers used the bright colored materials of their native garments and turned them into shirts that they wore because they were so comfortable.

Once the islands began to be visited regularly, surfers began purchasing these shirts as quickly as they were made. Once Hawaii gained statehood in 1959 the state gained additional exposure and nearly everybody was well aware of what an Hawaiian shirt looked like. These shirts are also known as the Aloha shirt and were being worn by celebrities like Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley and Tom Selleck when he played the part of Magnum P.I.

There is another individual that contributed to the popularity of the Hawaiian shirt. A well known singer and hula dancer, Hilo Hattie, was well know for wearing the colorful shirts and people associated the shirts with comfort as a result of her popularity.

She wasn't in it to be a movie star but she was in a few movies anyway where she wore the now famous Aloha shirt. She even kissed Elvis in "Blue Hawaii". She appeared on Hawaii 5-0 for a couple of episodes and wore the colorful shirt that everybody knows belongs to Hawaii. Although entertainment was a great vehicle she also worked with the islands on Easter Seals and she emceed the Luau at Queen's Surf.

People associated the shirt with a relaxed and comforting lifestyle that she enjoyed. Hilo Hattie was a school teacher as well and taught many subjects, including her favorite, which was music.

Although Hilo Hattie passed away in 1979 her name is still alive. The largest manufacturer of Hawaiian shirts purchased the rights to her name and Hilo Hattie shirt stores are now seen all over the islands. How to Play a C Chord on the Ukulele

When you first pick up the ukulele, the first chord you need to learn is C. As well as being easy to play and very common, C is the center of the whole music world.

You might think that A, being the first letter of the alphabet, would be the first letter in music. But that is not the case. It is standard to start with C.

This is because the key of C does not contain any sharps or flats (as you'll know if you play the piano).

To play the C chord, go to the A string (the one closest to the floor) and put your finger at the third fret.

You can find the third fret by counting up from the end of the neck of your uke. You need to press down on the gap between the second and third fret bars.

The precise place you hold the string down will not be the same for every size of uke. If you have a small ukulele, press down in the middle of the fret.

If you are playing a larger ukulele, you may want to hold the string down closer to the third third steel bar. If you hear a buzzing sound, that means you are too close. So back off a little to prevent this sound.

The buzzing sound can also be caused by having a poorly made ukulele. If you can't get rid of the buzzing no matter how carefully you fret, you might want to think about upgrading to a new uke.

The force required to fret correctly will come with practice. Press too hard and the pitch of the note will be affected. Don't press hard enough and the string will be muffled.

Play that note by itself and listen to how it sounds. Does it ring out clearly? Does it sound like a string that is played open? Also, is it in pitch?

One way to check you are fretting correctly is to play the a string at the third fret and the C string open at the same time. If they sound good together, you are fretting correctly.

Now that you have that string fretted correctly, you are ready to play the C chord as no other strings need fretting.
